Course search for thousands of courses.
Course search across thousands of courses and several faculties.
- To the first concrete direction
- ~1 month
- Iterations to approve most views
- 1–2
- Partnership, from a 6-month start
- 2.5+ years
01 — The challenge
What needed solving
The course search, launched about a decade earlier, had become hard to use: dense information, weak visual hierarchy and difficult search. Every course also carries many conditional fields — schedules, prerequisites, enrolment rules, grading — that were hard to present clearly.
02 — What we did
Our contribution
- Figma
- HTML / CSS / JS
- Tailwind CSS
- Preline
- WCAG 2.1 AA
Designing straight toward production
We went directly into high-fidelity UI in Figma, so stakeholders could compare solutions before any development time was spent. A first concrete direction stood after about a month, and most views were approved within one or two iterations.
UX & UI redesign
Search, filters, results, course details and a course calendar, scoped for the MVP together with the client. We first thought the calendar was too much for the MVP; the university saw it as essential, so we found a way to build it within the time and budget.
Reusable design system
Built on Tailwind CSS and Preline, agreed with the university’s engineers: tokens, components and patterns for navigation, search, filters, cards and forms that later carried over to other university services.
Accessible, production-ready frontend
Responsive HTML, CSS and JavaScript targeting WCAG 2.1 AA — keyboard use, contrast, focus and error states included — while the university’s engineers modernised the platform behind it.
From one project to a partnership
January 2024: Course Search. Six months later: the Predeparture Portal, a new service that brought an offline process online. Then Student Home, Scheduler and SMART student services — and systems for university staff.
03 — The outcome
Where it stands
- The design system is reused for later university services.
- Follow-on projects: Predeparture Portal, Student Home, Scheduler and SMART student services.
- A six-month project grew into an ongoing partnership.
